Family Mediation

DPA Mediation Service
In addition to our other services, DPA offer a Family Mediation Service.    Our Mediation Service is headed by Susan Hughes who is a Resolution trained Family Mediator with many years experience of dealing with family cases.
Mediation gives you the freedom to make your own decisions and can greatly reduce the costs and time which are involved in court proceedings

So, what is Mediation and how can this work for you
Mediation is a process in which both parties in relationship breakdown are encouraged with the help of a trained Mediator to try and resolve any differences which have arisen between them.     The issues may relate to such things as disputes over children, finances or indeed any other issue resulting from the breakdown of the relationship.

The process is designed to help those involved in family breakdown to communicate better with one another, without tension and anger and to reach their own decisions about all or some of the issues and at the end to come to an agreement which. whilst perhaps not ideal, is one which the parties feel they can live with.  Rather than having a decision imposed upon them by a court.

As an all issues trained Mediator Susan is committed to helping parties to discuss and agree their arrangements rather than having to go to a Court with all the attendant delays and expense.

We will always discuss with you whether Mediation is suitable for the circumstances of your case and whilst Mediation is a voluntary process you should be aware that since 6th April 2011 it is a requirement (subject to exceptional circumstances) that parties attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting before a Court application can be made.    We will discuss with you those exceptional circumstances and whether they apply in your particular case.

In general we will usually recommend that you attend an initial assessment meeting to consider whether Mediation is appropriate in your particular circumstances.

What are the costs of Mediation
We will provide you with details of our fees but free Mediation is available if you are eligible. We will be able to assess your eligibility to receive free mediation.

What is important to remember is that mediation can greatly reduce your legal fees and especially if court proceedings are avoided.

The Ministry of Justice have made a short film on Understanding Family Mediation.

If after reading this  you feel that mediation may be an option for you then please contact Susan.
